CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Sun Temple

EXPECTATIONS OF TOWERING rocks, marble, and pillars were nowhere to be seen. Gold, precious metals, stones, and shiny things were not what awaited us. What I saw in front of me was nothing like that at all. It was a tree. Well, not just a tree, the tree. Largest tree in this forest. That was saying something based on how big most of the trees were here. They had to have been thousands of years old to be this big. Since the beginning of this land perhaps.

I couldn’t even imagine how old the tree temple had to be to have grown to be larger than a football field, and that didn’t even account for the branches coming off of it that curved downward towards the ground, instead of up to the sky. It was different from all the other trees, like an angel oak, but greater in magnitude than I had ever seen. The branches sprung up from its massive trunk, out, and then down around it like spider’s legs. The veins of the wood glowed. Even without closing my eyes I could see the energy billowing from it like gold ribbons.

Reaching out, I could feel the golden ribbons calling out. Its energy far reaching.

“Most of the branches connect back to the ground. There’s no way that the Mentis guard wouldn’t sense us as soon as we set foot there,” Brandy groaned.

“If it’s surrounded by the astral plane, we shouldn’t set foot on it at all.” For once I felt like I wasn’t the blanch everyone liked to remind me I was. Closing my eyes, I could see the little lights that moved around in formation, the guards certainly weren’t lazy. But a few of them didn’t move at all, I almost missed seeing them through the haze of the tree’s energy.

“Yah,” she said sarcastically, “because I didn’t think of that. We need to do more than just find the entrance.” Sitting on the edge of the tree, she looked out over the terrain. “We don’t know how to get into the temple. You can astral project yourself all over the place in there, moving around without being caught, but that doesn’t help us get through the doors. I have to think.” Brandy buried her head in her hands and rubbed at her temples. She didn’t think I could help us plan our entry. This was her challenge alone, and I was merely an inconvenience to her.

Then I heard the voice that started it all, “Let me hold your hand...”

The voice was melodic and haunted. Now that we were here, it pulled me in closer. My body was moving forward without thinking, drawing me in.

“What are you doing?” Brandy grabbed my arm.

“Shhh, can’t you hear her?”

“… your hand...” It repeated. I looked down to see the five tilde marks throbbing, and when I closed my eyes they glowed brighter than anything I’d ever seen them do before.

Then I walked off the branch into nothing. Into everything. Into the sun itself, the light of the temple too bright to see.
